Mikuláš Tóth, Bishop of Prešov (1876–1882)

Mikuláš Tóth also Nicholas / Nikolaus (born August 10, 1833 in Mukatschewo , Austrian Empire ; † May 21, 1882 in Prešov , Austria-Hungary ) was Greek Catholic bishop of the Prešov eparchy from 1876 until his death in 1882 .

The son of a cantor attended school in Satu Mare in Romania and then began to study philosophy . After his decision to become a priest, he studied theology first in Mukachevo and then in Budapest . On December 18, 1857, the feast day of St. Nicholas ( Julian calendar ), Bishop Basil Popovich ordained him a priest. He completed his studies with a doctorate in theology in 1860. He became professor of theology at Uzhhorod University and professor of moral theology at Budapest University . Bishop Stefano Pankovic brought him back and in 1873 appointed him rector of the Uzhgorodska seminary .

On April 3, 1876, Pope Pius IX appointed him . to the Bishop of Prešov. The episcopal ordination took place on May 21, 1876 in Uzhhorod Cathedral . He founded several foundations to support young people, orphans and the poor. He initiated the establishment of his own seminary in Prešov in order to enable his candidates for priesthood to study locally and to save them the stays in Uzhgorod, Budapest and Esztergom. Mikuláš Tóth died on the 6th anniversary of his episcopal ordination at the age of 49. He was buried in the crypt of the Prešov Cathedral.
