The mikvah in Besalú , a Spanish city ​​in the province of Girona ( Catalonia ), was built in the 12th century. The mikveh on Carrer del Prat is protected as a cultural monument.

history

The mikvah in Besalú is the only Jewish ritual bath on the Iberian Peninsula. It was discovered in 1964 under rubble in the basement. A stone staircase consisting of three sections leads to the water basin fed by the Fluvià river and a thermal spring over three times twelve steps . A Romanesque vault spans the square building that was in the basement of the medieval synagogue .
