The mikveh in Offenburg , a city in the west of Baden-Württemberg , was probably built in the 16th and 17th centuries. Century erected. The mikveh under the house Glaserstraße 8 is a protected cultural monument . It remained closed to the public until the 1970s.

history

In the great fire of 1689, the medieval buildings on the property above the ritual bath were destroyed, only the mikvah survived protected under the ground. During the construction of today's buildings, the plunge pool was converted into a fountain. The mikveh, located 14 meters below today's floor level, is accessible through the vaulted cellar of the house from 1793.

In 2015/16 the mikveh was refurbished in accordance with the monument. In the permanent exhibition, visitors receive information about the history of the Jews in Offenburg , the building history and the religious background.
