The milk plant hunters GmbH is a German dairy company based in Haag in Upper Bavaria . According to its own statement, it is the oldest existing private dairy in Germany.

Company history

The company was founded by Georg Jäger senior, who came to Haag from Heiterwang in Tyrol in 1870 . He first founded a small dairy and gradually opened up small milk catchment areas. After the business was handed over to his son Georg in 1911, the former post office with farm buildings was acquired in 1920 for the constantly growing business and a cheese dairy was built. The company is located at this location after several modifications and expansions until today. In the first decades cheeses such as Romadur , Tilsiter , Limburger and the Hague Castle cheese were made.

Over time, a butter factory, storage rooms, whey processing plants and new cheese dairy buildings and cheese production facilities were added. In 1920, the company acquired the property of the historic Hague Post Office with all its farm buildings. Today there is a dairy shop here. In 1936 the Jäger dairy started producing branded butter . A new company building took place in 1938 in a typical Upper Bavarian style.

After the company's founder's grandson, Dipl.-Kfm. and dairy master Hermann Jäger sen. took over the company and opened up foreign markets (especially Italy), the production of mainly Italian cheeses such as provolone , mozzarella and caciotta began. The milk catchment area around Haag continued to grow and new catchment areas, including in Austria ( Mühlviertel and Innviertel ), were added. 1983 a new semi -hard cheese dairy was put into operation, and in 1993 a completely new and state-of-the-art dairy building. In 2000 the culture preparation facility was completely rebuilt.

In 2001, Hermann Jäger jun., The great-grandson of the founder, took over the management of the family business. This was followed by the construction of a company's own combined heat and power plant and a smoking system with natural smoke for pasta filata . In addition to the construction of two high-bay warehouses and the commissioning of a new cheese factory, the sales area was realigned. By expanding the product portfolio, it was possible to supply markets in all European countries.

The milk supply increased continuously until the introduction of the quota in 1984 to over 100 million kg per year from approx. 1500 suppliers. In 2001 the same amount was supplied by only around 700 producers. Various measures have increased the processing capacity to around 650,000 kg of milk per day. For 2011 this corresponded to a production of approx. 19,000 tons of cheese and 1,500 tons of butter.

Between June and August 2010, after opening mozzarella packaging, the cheese turned blue, which was caused by the commonly occurring water germ Pseudomonas fluorescens . As a result of an improperly conducted press campaign, false reports and translation errors, sales collapsed in Italy, where the dairy had previously sold 90% of its mozzarella production, which was 15% of the market share in Italy (the company also represented 25% of the total Bavarian cheese exports). The share of Italian exports in cheese production then fell to two thirds. At the same time - also with new products such as Kashkaval - new markets in Poland and Hungary could be opened up. The Jäger dairy plant now exports mainly to Italy, France and Eastern Europe, as well as to Southeast Asia.

Due to the full utilization of production capacities, the Jäger dairy has been cooperating with the Gmundner dairy in Gmunden, Austria, since 2019 . The cooperation was initially concluded for 30 years.
