Miliammellus is the only genus of the order Silicoloculinida , an order of shell -bearing, sea-dwelling unicellular organisms from the group of foraminifera . Their cases are made of opal .
Features and way of life
The classification mark is the formation of cases made of opal , which is secreted by the animals. The small, egg-shaped and imperforate housings, no more than 0.5 millimeters long, are twisted, the chambers following the first chamber are each half a turn long, the chamber arrangement is quinquelokulinar, that is, the median plane of the chamber is at 72 ° angles offset. The chambers are widest at their base and taper towards the aperture , which is located as a curved slot at the end of the last chamber and is closed by a simple, tooth-like projection. The wall of the housing is thin and smooth.
The animals are known from sea depths of more than 4000 meters from the Bering Sea and the northern and central Pacific .
Systematics
The genus has been fossilized since the Upper Miocene and is the only representative of the family or order. When it was first described in 1978 it was added to the Miliolida , it was not until 1980 that it was placed in its own order.
Type species is Miliammellus legis .
