The Miller Sisters were an American country - and Rockabilly - vocal group . They were one of the few female groups on Sun Records .
Career
The Miller Sisters were actually sister-in-law and began their careers in their hometown of Tupelo , Mississippi , as the Miller Trio with Elsie's husband and Mildred's brother, Roy Miller. A local broadcaster WTUP's DJ suggested auditioning with label owner Sam Phillips in Memphis , Tennessee .
Phillips was impressed with the Miller Sisters' perfect harmony singing and thought he might make good sales with the duo. The Miller Sisters' first single was released in April 1955 on a Sun Records sub-label , Flip Records , with Someday You Will Pay on the A-side and You Didn't Think I Would on the B-side. Since Flip had to be closed a short time later, the titles appeared again on the Sun label. In January 1956, There's No Right Way To Do Me Wrong / You Can Tell Me - two songs they recorded during their second session - their next singing. A hit was still not achieved.
Roy Miller could not be heard on any of the recordings. Instead, Phillips relied on his professional studio musicians Stan Kesler ( steel guitar ) and Quinton Claunch ( guitar ). Ten Cats Down was then rockabilly for the first time and was supported by an entire band, which included Bill Taylor ( trumpet ) and Johnny Bernero ( drums ), as well as a piano that Smokey Joe Baugh played.
Despite the switch to a more popular direction, the Miller Sisters records continued to sell poorly. Phillips then refused to release any more songs by the duo, which meant the end of the collaboration between Sun and the Miller Sisters. Mildred then moved to the Northern States, while Elsie Jo and Roy Miller were intensively involved in the Pentecostal Church .
