The Milne Bay ( English Milne Bay ) is a more than 35 km long and 15 km wide bay in the province of the same name in southeastern Papua New Guinea at its eastern tip. It was discovered in 1606 by Luiz Váez de Torres and was named after Admiral Sir Alexander Milne .

In 1942 the Battle of Milne Bay took place here as part of the Battle of New Guinea , in which Japanese land forces were defeated by the Allies for the first time in the Pacific War .

The provincial capital Alotau is located on the northern bank of the bay .
