The wingspan of the moth is 50 to 60 millimeters. The species is characterized by a clear sexual dimorphism . In the males, the lower area of ​​the upper side of the wing is strongly iridescent blue , in the females, however, without Schiller. Common to both sexes is the black-brown basic color of the upper sides of the wing, the whitish band on it, the white spots near the apex of the forewings and the small white dots on the wing edge. Typical of the species is the silver-white to ice-gray color of the underside of the wing, which is interrupted by a brown stripe, white spots and a black eye spot. The proboscis is yellow.

Distribution, subspecies and habitat

The species occurs in northeast India , Bhutan , Myanmar , Thailand , Vietnam and Sumatra . Six subspecies are classified in the individual occurrence areas . Mimathyma ambica primarily inhabits tropical rainforests .

Way of life

The males like to fly in the sun in stony areas and sometimes rest on rocks. Since they are very faithful to their location, they usually return to their place of origin after disruptions. Occasionally they suck on damp spots in the ground or excrement to absorb fluids and minerals. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of the elm family (Ulmaceae).
