description

The southern hair-nosed bat is a medium-sized bat with an overall length of 65 to 75 mm and a forearm length of 54.6 to 60.7 mm. The ears are large and pointed, the nasal blade long and lanceolate. The wings are wide and at the same time relatively long. The fur is woolly and of a warm brown, with the individual hairs being lighter at the base than at the tip. The tail is about 14.5 mm long and completely embedded in the first third of the tail membrane. The southern hair- nosed bat looks similar to other members of the leaf-nosed family , but differs significantly from them in certain characteristics. For example, the nasal sheet is longer than that of species of the genera Tonatia and Chrotopterus . Mimon bennettii is also larger than Macrophyllum macrophyllum and has no enlarged feet. The southern hair-nosed bat is larger than its sister species, Mimon crenulatum . In addition, the nasal sheet of M. crenulatum is densely hairy on the edge, while that of Mimon bennettii has no hair.

Way of life

The Southern hair-nosed bat , like most bats, is nocturnal and feeds mainly on arthropods . However, animals have also been observed in Mexico preying on small lizards. During the day, the species usually hangs in caves, mines or hollow tree trunks in groups of up to ten individuals. The hanging place the Southern Hair proboscis bat divides occasionally with other bat species such as the Jamaican fruit bat ( Artibeus jamaicensis ), the Seba's short-tailed bat ( Carollia perspicillata ), the commons vampire ( Desmodus rotundus ), the hairy-legged vampire bat ( Diphylla ecaudata ) Glossophaga soricina , micronycteris megalotis , Mormoops megalophylla , Myotis keaysi , Natalus stramineus , Peropteryx macrotis , Pteronotus davyi and Pteronotus parnellii .

distribution and habitat
