life and work

Min Clara Kim first completed an art degree at Hong-Ik University in Seoul before moving to Germany, where she began studying painting in 1994 at the Münster Art Academy in Hermann-Josef Kuhna's painting class , which she started with in 2001 Graduated from the academy letter. In 1998 she became a master student of Hermann-Josef Kuhna. In 1999 she received a travel grant from the Münster Art Academy to Vienna. In 2002 she was awarded the art prize of the Deutsche Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken .

In Min Clara Kim's representational pictures, a single object or a single person is usually placed in the center of the picture, often only surrounded by white or poorly differentiated surroundings. Her motifs often come from the East Asian treasure trove of forms, but are formulated in the manner and with profound knowledge of Western oil painting. “Her pictures alternate between a precisionist fine painting, with roots back to the Renaissance, and Korean floral patterns, enveloped in the breath of Eastern contemplation. These pictures combine the trompe l'œil of western still lifes with the charm of eastern ornamentation and the white grounds of ink painting in an almost dreamlike security of harmony [...] “The realistic representation can easily be confused with a photorealism . However, Kim does not paint your subjects from the model, but recreates them . "Layers and folds are correctly bulked and canted according to the rules of plastic appearance [...]". In doing so, she calculates and plays with the viewing experiences of the viewer and thus simultaneously researches a universal language of forms.

Min Clara Kim lives and works in Düsseldorf, where she runs a studio with the painter Hugo Boguslawski .

She is one of the founding members of the RheinBrücke artist group . She has had German citizenship since 2005 and uses the name Clara as her middle name.
