Mindaros

Mindaros († 410 BC near Kyzikos ) was a Spartan general of the fifth century BC.

Mindaros was in the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC) in 411/410 BC. BC as Nauarch commander-in-chief of the Spartan fleet. He deliberately attacked Athenian bases on the Hellespont in order to prevent the grain deliveries from the Black Sea region , which are vital for Attica . In several sea battles, including the Battle of Kynossema , he fought with varying success against the Athenian general Alkibiades . In the battle of Kyzikos on the south bank of the Sea of Marmara against the Athenians under Alcibiades, Mindaros fell in 410 BC. Chr.

His name is mentioned in the Spartan army report, which the Athenians considered a prime example of laconic brevity:

“Boats lost. Mindaros dead. Men are hungry. Don't know what to do. "
