Council of Ministers of Ethiopia

The Council of Ministers ( Amharic የሚኒስትሮች ምክር ቤት , transcribed Ye ministeroch meker bét ) is a political institution of Ethiopia that was established by the constitution of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from 1995. Since 2018 it has consisted of the Ahmed cabinet .

With the Prime Minister, it holds the highest executive powers of the Federal Government (Article 72, Paragraph 1 of the Constitution), its members are jointly responsible before the House of Representatives (Article 72, Paragraph 2). The Council of Ministers consists of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, the individual ministers and possibly other ministers who are designated within the framework of the law (Art. 76, Paragraph 2). All nominations must be accepted by the House of Representatives (Art. 55, Para. 13); As a consequence, as soon as the amalgamation of the Council of Ministers loses the majority in the House of Representatives, the Council of Ministers must be dissolved (Art. 60, Paragraph 2).

According to Article 72 paragraph 2 of the Constitution, the Council of Ministers is also responsible to the Prime Minister. The latter is the President and the representative of the Council of Ministers, of which he coordinates the activities (Art. 74, Para. 4). Otherwise, legislative initiatives, political activities, regulations, directives and other decisions that are passed by the Council of Ministers must be monitored by the Prime Minister (Art. 74, Paragraph 5).
