The Minjung Party ( Korean : 민중당, transliteration : Minjung-dang , German : People's Party ) is a left-wing party in South Korea . The party emerged on October 15, 2017 from the merger of the Saemin jungjeong party and the Minjung yeonhap party .
history
The two predecessor parties emerged from the Tonghap-jinbo party , which was banned in 2014, and merged on October 15, 2017 to form the Minjung party. Two independent MPs , elected in South Korea's general election in 2016 , joined the Minjung party. However, Yoon Jong-oh lost his seat on December 22, 2017 for violating campaign law. The party currently has a member of the National Assembly of South Korea, Kim Jong-hoon . In the local elections in South Korea in 2018, the party won 11 out of 2,927 seats in local parliaments.
On July 20 and 21, 2018, three members of the Minjung Party met with three representatives of the Korean Social Democratic Party from North Korea in the Chinese city of Shenyang to seek parliamentary exchange. The South Korean Ministry of Reunification did not allow the meeting and recommended that the meeting be postponed. The Minjung Party representatives nevertheless traveled to Shenyang and attended the meeting.
Alignment
The party has its target group among the workers , farmers , women, young people and the poorer urban population. The focus of the political work is on the conclusion of the candlelight revolution that led to the impeachment of Park Geun-hye . The Minjung party advocates a stronger welfare state to support workers and advocates a dialogue for the peaceful unification of South and North Korea to form the Korean state . In doing so, she relies on the dialogue between representatives of both Korean states.
Controversy
The Minjung party is criticized in particular by conservative politicians for standing in the footsteps of the Tonghap-jinbo party. This was banned and dissolved in 2014 due to unconstitutionality . Some former members formed new parties like the predecessor parties of the Minjung party. The Minjung party is therefore accused of wanting to re-establish the Tonghap-jinbo party.
