The Tonghap-jinbo party ( Korean 통합 진보당 RR Tonghap-jinbo-dang , German ' United Progressive Party ' ) was a left-wing liberal party in South Korea , which existed from December 2011 to December 2014.

history

The party was formed on December 5, 2011 through the merger of the Minju-nodong Party ( 민주 노동당 ‚Democratic Workers Party ' ), the Participatory People's Party and part of the Jinbo-sin Party ( 진보 신당 Jinbo-sin-dang , German ‚ Neue Progressive Party ' ) was founded. It was led by the triumvirate Rhyu Si-min ( 유시민 ), Lee Jung-hee ( 이정희 ) and Sim Sang-jeong ( 심상정 ).

After the general election on April 11, 2012 , the party had 13 of the 300 members in the Gukhoe , the South Korean national assembly. It became the third strongest party in the assembly, after the conservative Saenuri Party ( 새누리 당 Sae-nuri-dang , German 'New World Party' ) and the liberal Minju Party ( 민주당 Minju-dang , which was renamed in 2013) German 'Democratic Party' ).

On December 19, 2014, the Tonghap-jinbo Party was dissolved by the South Korean Constitutional Court on charges of supporting the North Korean government. The request was made by the government under the Saenuri Party President Park Geun-hye ( 박근혜 ). The judges justified their decision with the fact that the Tonghap-jinbo party represented a concrete danger to the basic democratic order and therefore the legal benefit outweighs the restriction of democratic rights. The members of parliament were also deprived of their seats.

The ban was preceded by the imprisonment of member Lee Seok-ki ( 이석기 ) for treason. He is said to have tried to carry out a coup against the South Korean government and a reunification under North Korean leadership with a group of around 130 people .
