The Franciscan monastery in Enns was founded in the 13th century and, after several interruptions, is still inhabited by Franciscans ( ordo fratrum minorum , "Friars Minor"); In the meantime, Franciscan conventuals (" Minorites ") had also lived there. The monastery is located in the town of Enns ( Upper Austria ).
history
The first Franciscans came to Enns before 1280 and founded a monastery there. But this had to be given up in 1551 during the Reformation . In 1644 Franciscan conventuals ( Minorites ) settled in Enns and were able to move into the monastery again, but without the church attached to it, which in 1553 had been elevated to the parish church of Enns instead of the Laurentius church of Lorch . Under Emperor Joseph II , the monastery was again closed in 1784 and confiscated by the religious fund . In 1790 the building and the garden were sold to the city of Enns and over time they were used as a theater, military academy and orphanage.
In the middle of the 19th century, Bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier and a part of the citizenry tried to bring religious people back to Enns. In 1859 Franciscans of the Tyrolean Province came to the former monastery, which they acquired in 1883. From 1892 to 1894 they converted part of the building into their own monastery church. The original altars for the neo-Romanesque church were designed by the artist and Franciscan priest Johannes Maria Reiter. The Franciscans were active as pastors at the monastery church and until 1917 also as cooperators at the parish church. In the 20th century the artistically valuable cloister of the old monastery was renovated several times and the furnishings of the monastery church changed.
Today a small convent of five Franciscans lives in the monastery and is active in pastoral care.
