The Miombo Barbet ( Tricholaema frontata ) is a bird art from the family of the African barbets. The species occurs in Africa. No subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the miombo bearded bird as not endangered ( least concern ).

Appearance

The males have a wing length of 7.5 to 8.3 centimeters. The tail length is 4.5 to 5.1 centimeters. The beak reaches a length of 1.6 to 1.9 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .

Males and females have a red spot on their foreheads separated from the base of their beak by a black line. The rest of the forehead, the top of the head and the nape of the neck are black. A yellowish-white wide stripe of the eyes extends to the back. Underneath, a broad, black-brown streak of beard runs from the base of the beak to the back. The back is black with yellow spots. The control springs are black-brown. Freshly moulted, they have fine yellow edges. The throat and chin are white with fine brown and black spots. A yellow band runs over the finely spotted chest, the belly is creamy white with blackish-brown spots up to the lower tail coverts. The featherless skin around the eyes is gray-brown, the eyes are dark brown.

There is hardly any possibility of confusion, as other bearded bird species with very similar plumage are largely absent in the miombo bearded bird's distribution area. The distribution area borders in the southwest of Tanzania on that of the diadem hair beardling . The Miombo bearded bird differs from this by the yellow chest band. In the southwest of Zambia , the distribution area overlaps with that of the red-fronted bearded bird , with which the miombo bearded bird occasionally mates and breeds incorrectly. The red-fronted bearded bird differs from the miombo bearded bird in that it has a black throat.

Distribution area and habitat

The range of the miombo bearded bird extends from Angola over the south of the Congo and over Zambia to the southwest of Tanzania and the west of Malawi . In Angola, the Miombo bearded bird occurs up to 1,100 meters above sea level, in western Malawi it lives mainly between 910 and 1,520 meters above sea level. The habitat is the miombo , a large type of forest savanna .

Way of life

The Miombo-bearded bird is a solitary, inconspicuous African bearded bird, which is noticeable through its calls. It is an omnivore that occasionally catches insects from the air. It also eats termites and beetles as well as various fruits, probably also the nestlings and eggs of other bird species.

The clutch consists of two to three matt white eggs. Almost nothing is known about the breeding season. Both parent birds are involved in the care of the young birds.
