The red-fronted barbet ( Tricholaema diademata ) is a bird art from the family of the African barbets. The species occurs in East Africa. Several subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the diademed beardling as not endangered ( least concern ).
Appearance
Diadem hair beards weigh about 30 grams. The males of the nominate form have a wing length between 7.5 and 8.2 centimeters. The tail measures between 4.2 and 4.9 centimeters. The beak length is 1.7 and 2.0 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .
Males and females have a red forehead, which is separated from the base of the beak by a narrow black stripe. A black stripe runs over the top of the head down to the neck. This black stripe has an individually different number of yellowish-white or pure white spots. The black stripe is framed by two white stripes that stretch up to the neck. The ear covers, throat and chin are white, in some individuals the area is slightly spotted black. The back is black up to the upper tail-ceiling and has yellow longitudinal spots. The black control feathers are narrowly lined with yellow and white. The underside of the body is creamy-white, freshly moulted the breast looks slightly yellow. The beak is gray and becomes blackish towards the tip. The featherless skin around the eyes is gray, the eyes are dark to red-brown. The feet and legs are gray to black-brown.
The fiery-forehead bearded bird , whose distribution area overlaps that of the diadem haired beardling, has very similar plumage. However, it is significantly smaller. The diadem hair beardling also has a noticeably stronger beak. The diadem bearded beard differs from the tiara bearded bird and the black-headed bearded bird in its red forehead and light throat. The yellow-spotted bearded bird also has a red forehead, but differs significantly in its body plumage and occurs in West Africa.
Distribution area and habitat
The distribution area of the diadem hair beard stretches from the south of Sudan and central Ethiopia to the north and east of Uganda , the interior of Kenya and the southwest of Tanzania . It basically occurs at an altitude of over 600 meters and is still observed in individual regions at altitudes of 2100 meters. As a habitat he prefers acacia and long-thread forests as well as tree-covered grasslands.
Way of life
The tiara hair beard occasionally hunts for swarming ants together with earmarked bearded birds and double-banded racing birds . More typical of him, however, is a methodical search for insects on branches and between the foliage of trees and bushes. He also eats berries and fruits.
The diademed bearded beard defends a relatively large territory, but several pairs can be found on an abundantly fruit-bearing tree without aggression. The diadem hair beards are cave breeders. They dig their own breeding cave. The clutch consists of two to four eggs. The breeding season is unknown. The nestling period is around 28 days. The Kleine Honiganzeiger is a brood parasite of the diadem hair beard.
