The black-throated barbet ( Tricholaema melanocephala ) is a bird art from the family of the African barbets. The species occurs in western Africa. Several subspecies are distinguished. The IUCN classifies the black-headed bearded bird as not endangered ( least concern ).

Appearance

The males of the nominate form have a wing length of 6.2 to 6.8 centimeters. The tail is between 3.4 and 4.4 inches long. The beak length is 1.4 to 1.8 centimeters. Females have similar body measurements. There is no noticeable sexual dimorphism .

Males and females have a glossy blue-black skull. A wide white stripe of eyes runs from the eyes to the nape of the neck. A white streak of beard runs from the sides of the beak to the sides of the chest. The upper back is blue-black, the lower back brownish. The rump is striped pale yellow on a brown background. The upper tail-coverts are black with pale yellow vertical stripes and white feather tips. The control springs are brown-black. On the underside, the control springs are gray-brown with white spring shafts.

The black of the throat extends shield-like to the front breast and is framed in white. The underside is creamy white to yellowish white from the lower breast to the under tail coverts. There are teardrop-shaped spots on the flanks. The beak is black, but lighter gray towards the base of the beak. The legs and feet are gray to black. Young birds are similar to adult birds, but their plumage is generally duller in color.

The black-headed bearded bird can be confused with the diademed bearded bird . However, it lacks the teardrop-shaped spots on the sides of the body that are characteristic of the diademed bearded bird. There is also a resemblance to the tiara hair beard , but this one has a red forehead.

Distribution area and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the black-headed bearded bird stretches from south-east Sudan and north Ethiopia via Djibouti and Somalia to central Tanzania . The altitude distribution ranges from sea level to altitudes of 1820 meters in Somalia and Ethiopia. The habitat is usually dry forests and bushland. The black-headed bearded bird is common locally.

Way of life

Black-headed bearded birds look for insects individually, in pairs or in small family groups in bushes and trees. Occasionally, insects are also caught from the air. The black-headed bearded bird also eats buds and fruits. The Schwarzkopf-Bartvogel is extremely territorial, but the size of the territory varies considerably. Black-headed bearded birds are cave breeders, but so far neither the size of the nest cavity nor the size of the clutch have been researched.
