features
Compared to the Micropodisma species, the Southwestern Mountain Insect is slightly smaller and clearly identifiable. The species has an olive-green to yellow-green basic color. Starting at the eye, a black longitudinal band runs backwards, usually to the tip of the abdomen . Sometimes the bandage is broken. The underside of the hind legs is bright red, while the upper side is dull wine-red. The wings are completely regressed. The hearing organ is also reduced to tiny remains.
Occurrence and way of life
The species is endemic to the Italian and French southwestern Alps. It occurs at altitudes from 1800 to 2900 meters. The almost closed area extends from north to south roughly from the Aosta Valley to the Stura di Demonte . The largest part of the distribution area is in Italy, in France the species can be found on the local side of the Cottian Alps within an approximately 20 km wide strip. The habitat of the south-west alpine heather is the dwarf shrub heather , where it is quite common. Adults can be found from August to September.
