Mira Fuchrer (* 1920 in Warsaw ; † May 8, 1943 ibid) was a Polish-Jewish resistance fighter in the Warsaw Ghetto and a member of the Jewish Fighting Organization (Polish: Żydowska Organizacja Bojowa , ŻOB for short). She took an active part in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising during World War II .

Life

Mira Fuchrer was born in Warsaw. She worked in the Jewish youth organization Hashomer Hatzair . It was there that she probably met Mordechaj Anielewicz . The two became a couple. In September 1939 Fuchrer went to Vilnius with Anielewicz . They returned to Warsaw in 1940. In November they both ended up in the Warsaw ghetto.

There Mira Fuchrer worked together with her friends Towa Frenkel and Rachela Zylberberg in a small tailor shop. In 1942 she went to other ghettos as a reporter.

During the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, she fought in the so-called central ghetto. On May 8, 1943, she was together with Mordechaj Anielewicz and a group of 120 insurgents in the bunker at ulica Miła 18. When the bunker was discovered and attacked by the Germans, the resistance fighters refused to surrender. At Arie Wilner's call, most of them committed suicide or died from gas that the Germans fed into the bunker.

Mira Fuchrer's name is on the memorial obelisk that was erected at the foot of Anielewicz Hill in 2006, along with the names of 50 other insurgents whose identities have been established. Her friends Towa Frenkel and Rachela Zylberberg are also mentioned here.
