John Erik Kruse (born October 30, 1865 in Malmö , † July 15, 1914 in Djursholm ) was a Swedish art historian .

Life

John Kruse, the son of Lorentz Edvard Kruse (1830–1904) and Maria Benedicta Anna Flensburg (1840–1891), studied aesthetics and literature at Lund University from 1883 and then from 1890 under Henrik Schück (1855–1947) art history. In 1895 he received his doctorate in Lund with a dissertation on Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht .

In 1896 he began working for the Swedish National Museum in Stockholm . There he became director of the manuscript and copperplate collections. He was involved in public relations in the museum. For example, in 1898, together with Carl Gustaf Laurin (1868–1940), he organized Sunday tours for workers. On July 1, 1912, Kruse resigned from museum work at his own request and devoted himself exclusively to writing; focused in particular on the manuscript of his work The Drawings of Rembrandt - published in 1920 by Carl Neumann .

Kruse wrote about a number of Swedish artists - such as Oscar Levertin , the drawings by Johan Tobias Sergel and Carl Larsson , his closest friend among the Swedish artists. Together with Anders Zorn , he advanced Föreningen för Grafisk Konst, founded in 1887, for a good thirteen years in its early years.

John Erik Kruse had three brothers - Carl Lorentz Edvard, Ernst Ludvig and Lars Gustaf. He married Hilda Elvira (Vivi) Bergh (1872–1966) in Malmö on March 17, 1899. The couple had two children. In his villa in Djursholm he liked to relax while playing the piano. Axel Gauffin (1877–1964) remembered that the noli me tangere of the fear of the sensitive in front of the public had swung in Kruse's character .
