Miramar is a district of Havana . Administratively belongs to the municipality of Miramar ( municipality ) Playa . In the first half of the 20th century, an expensive residential area developed around Quinta Avenida (5th Street) with many parks, numerous villa-like private residences and social meeting places for the upper class such as the Miramar Yacht Club, dating from the 1920s, or the Country Club. The buildings were mostly kept in a historicizing eclectic style. The Quinta Avenida was considered the most beautiful street in Havana. After the Cuban Revolution , most of the residents of Miramar emigrated to the United States . As a result, the building fabric began to deteriorate from 1959 onwards, and then numerous of the houses were taken over by commercial enterprises and revitalized. Today the embassy district of the Cuban capital is also located here. The Roman Catholic Church of Santa Rita de Casia is a regular meeting place for the opposition group Women in White , the Damas de Blanco .

Through the tunnel under the mouth of the Río Almendares, Quinta Avenida became the western continuation of the Malecón , which fueled the real estate boom in this area in the 1950s. Monumental churches were also built, such as those of Jesus de Miramar, hotels, casinos and artificial beaches. One of the dominant buildings today is the embassy of the Russian Federation , formerly that of the Soviet Union .
