The Miravalles is a 2028 m high stratovolcano in the northwest of Costa Rica . It is located in the province of Guanacaste near the Rincón de la Vieja .
The crater was formed about 0.6 to 1.5 million years ago through several explosive eruptions. The only human-observed eruption was a small gas explosion on the volcano's southwest flank in 1946.
