The Mirror Lake is a lake in the US city of Lake Placid in the state of New York .
Location and use
Mirror Lake is located in the center of Lake Placid and is used for many recreational activities. In summer there is a lot of canoeing or kayaking on the lake or stand up paddling . In winter, ice skating is practiced on the frozen surface and dog sledding is offered.
From 1918 to the construction of the Olympic Stadium in the winter of 1930/31, several speed skating competitions were held on the frozen surface of Mirror Lake, including the North American championships and US championships. In 1926, the 1924 Olympic champions Charles Jewtraw and Clas Thunberg competed here in a show race. As part of the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Mirror Lake was used as a training facility for speed skaters .
Salinity of the lake
Mirror Lake has elevated levels of sodium and chloride due to winter deicing practices on the surrounding roads. In addition, at Mirror Lake, due to rainwater runoff, there is an accumulation of salty water at the bottom of the lake.
