Mixer (cryptology)

Type 131B2 mixer of the type used in the United States during World War II to encrypt military telex communications .

Under a mixer ( English mixer ) is understood in the cryptology a device for encryption of plaintext and / or decryption of ciphertext .

Mixers find an important application in connection with the cryptographically secure one-time key method ( English one-time pad , or OTP for short ). In the simplest case, they combine two input data streams, namely the plain text and the key , to form an output data stream, i.e. the ciphertext, using the exclusive-or link (XOR). One of the first cryptographic machines to use this was the British 5-UCO and the German T43 teleprinter during World War II .
