The Miserere ( Latin 'have mercy'; formerly also Miserere mei 'have mercy on me'), also called the Kopremesis ( compound from ancient Greek κόπρος kópros , German ' Kot ' , and ἔμεσις émesis , German ' vomiting ' ), is a medical synonym for the rare symptom of vomiting .

This leads to non-physiological vomiting of the colon contents . The Miserere occurs v. a. with a complete intestinal obstruction (med. ileus ), triggered by retro peristalsis . Another cause may be a defect in the ileocecal valve , which is normally intended to prevent the contents of the large intestine from flowing back into the small intestine .

The Miserere was in the past for lack of appropriate treatment methods prognostically very unfavorable.
