Misery was an Australian death metal band from Brisbane that was formed in 1991 and broke up in 2005.

history

The band was formed in 1991. The demos Sorting of the Insects and Astern Diabolus followed . After the debut album A Necessary Evil (1993) and a national tour with Pungent Stench , the band split from original singer Darren Goulding. Moises Contreras joined in as a replacement. This was followed by the EP Insidious in 1994. In addition, a music video was created for the song Torn . Then Contreras left the group. After a few months looking in vain for a new singer, bassist Damon Robinson also took over the vocals. Then the group reached a record deal with Warhead Records , about which the album Revel in Blasphemy was released in 1996 . This enabled the band to increase its popularity considerably. The release was followed by appearances at Metal for the Brain and in and around Sydney . In 1998 the next album was completed. Due to financial problems of the label, which resulted in the closure of Warhead Records, the release was delayed. This only took place in 2000 at Venomous Records under the name Curses . During the waiting period, the members had devoted themselves to other projects. After a tour of New Zealand , guitarist Laszlo Kananghinis left the band. After the recordings for a fourth album were finished in 2005, Robinson also left the line-up because he had decided to live in the USA . Misery was then dissolved. The album was released in mid-2007 on Obsidian Records under the name On Demon Wings . For a tour with the Mournful Congregation in early 2009 the group got back together for a short time.

style

Brian Fischer Giffin described the band in his book Encyclopedia of Australian Heavy Metal as one of the toughest Australian death metal bands. In addition, influences from Grindcore and Doom Metal are processed . Justin Donnelly of themetalforge.com also described the music in his review of On Demon Wings as Death Metal with a Doom Metal influence. The vocals consist of aggressive growling , while the bass plays low and the drums are varied. The speed is often varied in the songs.
