Missenyi is a district in the Tanzanian region of Kagera with the administrative center in Kyaka. It borders Uganda to the north, the Bukoba district to the east and south, the Karagwe district to the southwest and the Kyerwa district to the west .

geography

The Missenyi district has a size of 2523 square kilometers and around 200,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). It is located on a high plateau at an altitude between 1,300 and 1,400 meters above sea level, in the northeast it also has a share of Lake Victoria . Most of the drainage takes place via the Kagera River , which forms the southwestern border, then receives the Ngono River and flows into Lake Victoria. The climate in the district is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . There is little precipitation in June, July and August, otherwise it rains between 60 and 240 millimeters per month, especially in the two rainy seasons from October to December and March to May. The average temperature is constantly between 20 and 21 degrees Celsius.

The district was established in 2007 when it split from the Bukoba district.

population

The population grew from 152,786 in 2002 to 202,632 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of 2.8 percent. The literacy rate of those over fifteen increased from 75 to 83 percent during this period.

Facilities and services

  • Education: The 95 public primary schools attended 19,462 boys and 19,413 girls, plus there were nine private schools (as of 2019).
  • Water: In 2012, 68 percent of the population was supplied with clean water.

Economy and Infrastructure

Almost three quarters of the employed population worked in their own farms. Ten percent were employed, nine worked in the household and eight percent were self-employed in non-agricultural areas.

  • Agriculture: The most commonly grown fruits are beans, corn, cassava, sweet potatoes, bananas, coffee and sugar cane (as of 2017). The district also has a lot of alluvial land with wide pasture areas that are good for cattle breeding. Cattle are mostly bred in medium-sized and large farms, goats and sheep are kept by small farmers all over the country.
  • Fisheries: Especially in the northeast on Lake Victoria, fishing is an important economic factor.
  • Roads: The most important road connection in the district is the national road T4 from the regional capital Bukoba in the southeast to Kyaka and further north to Uganda.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Minziro Forest Reserve: The 31,142 hectare reserve is located on the border with Uganda and is home to 238 species of birds.
