The Mississippi Possum Hunters were an American old-time band from Carroll County , Mississippi .
history
Mandolinist and Fiddler Lonnie Ellis was originally from the small town of Friendship, Mississippi, about 20 miles east of Winona . Ellis' father was also a Fiddler and Long's brother Homer recorded with the duo Milner and Curtis for Vocalion Records .
On May 28, 1930, the group recorded four pieces for Victor Records at the Ellis Auditorium in Memphis , Tennessee , all of which were released. However, these four pieces were of significantly different origins. While Mississippi Breakdown (previously recorded by the Leake County Revelers ) and Possum on the Rail were traditional pieces, Rufus Rastus was a popular song released in 1905 and The Last Shot Got Him was a blues by Mississippi John Hurt . This was not followed by another session of the Mississippi Possum Hunters.
Lonnie Ellis died around 1979.
