A Spoonful of Sugar is a song that the Sherman brothers wrote for the film Mary Poppins . It was released in 1964 and interpreted in the film by Julie Andrews . The German version A spoonful of sugar was sung by Monika Dahlberg .

A Spoonful of Sugar is a song whose melody becomes Mary Poppins' leitmotif as the film progresses. The idea for the song came from Robert Sherman, whose children told him after an oral vaccination how good the medicine tasted.

The song was covered many times. Duke Ellington released a full album of songs from Mary Poppins, Duke Ellington Plays Mary Poppins , including A Spoonful of Sugar . A German version of the song dates from 1965; in the translation by Hans Bradtke , the song was interpreted by Rex Gildo .
