Mitchell is an impact crater northeast of the front of the moon on the southern edge of Mare Frigoris . It is heavily eroded and is covered by the southeastern wall of the large Aristotle crater .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the American astronomer Maria Mitchell .
