16. Medieval Spectaculum Oberwesel (2014)

The Medieval Spectaculum Oberwesel is a medieval market that takes place every two years at Whitsun in Oberwesel on the Rhine .

The market

Every two years on the weekend of Pentecost, Oberwesel celebrates its "Medieval Spectaculum" within the old city walls.

Performances by musical groups (in recent years, for example, In Extremo , Corvus Corax , Furunkulus and Spectaculatius ), theater groups and other artists take place on several stages . Handicrafts and old professions such as the manufacture of stonemasonry and woodturning, dyeing with natural colors, pottery, weaving and broom binding or grinding are demonstrated. The market stalls offer food and medieval merchandise.

In order to create a more authentic atmosphere, electricity and motors, all kinds of plastics, plastic dishes, paper plates and paper napkins are prohibited. Nor can you find cutlery, bottles or other glasses. The pavement of the old town is covered with straw and lanterns and street signs are dismantled or covered. In the evening the lighting is provided by candles, torches and lanterns.

With over 20,000 visitors each in recent years, the Medieval Spectaculum in Oberwesel is one of the largest events of its kind in Germany.

The Union

The Association for the Preservation of Medieval Customs in Oberwesel e. V. is the organizer of the Medieval Spectaculum in Oberwesel with its almost 150 members.

A 9-member board is responsible for the success of the festival. He works on a voluntary basis. The profit from an event goes towards the restoration of medieval buildings.
