Mittelirser roller mill

The Mittelirser roller mill in Irsen (in the municipality of Windeck in the Rhein-Sieg district ) is a water mill in the central Westerwald , which was in operation until 1993. It lies directly on the border between North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate .

In addition to the Mittelirser roller mill, there were five other mills in the Irsertal . The mill was first mentioned in 1577, but it is probably much older. It has been in the family since 1820. After 1948, the historic stone grinding processes were replaced by modern roller mills, but the old mill technology was retained. The old iron, overshot water wheel with a diameter of 3.80 meters is located in the “ice house”, a frost-proof room inside the mill, and drives two grinding gears via a crown gear . A secondary gear with transmission branches off from this gearbox, which drives the roller mills and additional equipment. The mill got its water from a mill pond above the village. The mill is a listed building .
