A center cutter is a pair of pliers for cutting, i.e. separating , especially wires or strings by wedge cutting . The name is derived from the position of the cutting edges , which, in contrast to side cutters , are arranged in the middle of the cutting jaws. The center cutter is used in particular in electrical installations to cut the individual wires of a cable . With the help of the leverage it is possible to cut even very thick wires (larger than 2.5 mm²) if the wire is inserted as close as possible to the joint of the pliers. Because of the symmetrically shaped cutting edges, the effort required is less with the center cutter than with side cutters of the same size with asymmetrically shaped cutting edges. There are different versions of these pliers. Power center cutters are usually particularly large center cutters and are also suitable for cutting hard wires, some have a transmission mechanism that is second to the lever , similar to bolt cutters .
