Mixed reality

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Mixed reality , Mixed reality or mixed reality be environments or systems combined, the natural perception of a user with an artificial (computer generated) mixing perception. In addition to the mainly computer-generated virtual reality , these are in particular systems of augmented reality and augmented virtuality.

Conceptual breadth

Representation of the reality-virtuality continuum

Mixed reality encompasses the entire “reality-virtuality continuum” with the exception of only reality and only virtuality : between the two extremes, only reality and only virtuality, there are stepless intermediate stages that mix the two. In particular, augmented reality and augmented virtuality are special forms of the mixed reality principle . The best way to illustrate these abstract terms is with concrete examples:

  • Pure reality is a person who goes to the supermarket to shop.
  • Augmented reality are e.g. B. glasses, on the inside of which a computerprojects the user's shopping list ; for example, so that the user has the impression that the shopping list is written on the wall of the supermarket. Reality is enriched here with virtual information.
  • Extended virtuality refers to applications that are experienced via VR glasses / an HMD and B. transmits the sound of a door intercom to the headphones when the doorbell rings. The virtuality is here enriched with real information.
  • Virtual reality refers to applications that areexperiencedvia VR glasses / HMD and exist purely virtually.

The term mixed reality is not only used in purely technical contexts, but is also used in philosophical, artistic and psychological areas. Examples are media communication , media education , media art and media design .

However, this should only be understood as a rough theoretical example, as modern man in today's age moves almost constantly in an augmented reality that is, for example, reshaped by media, social, religious or other virtual worlds, usually without the respective viewer this is still noticed and is able to separate.
