Alfred Hartmann (Manager)

Alfred Hartmann (born September 12, 1894 in Duisburg , † August 27, 1967 in Bad Godesberg ) was a German civil servant and industry manager.

Life and work

The son of a medical councilor studied law and political science in Freiburg, Munich, Berlin and Bonn from 1913 to 1917 . After his legal clerkship, he worked from 1923 to 1935 as a senior councilor in the Reich Ministry of Finance , where he was mainly concerned with the development of sales tax . Until 1933 he was also a member of the Center Party . Because he refused to join the NSDAP, he was transferred in 1935 as head of the Berlin-Friedrichshain tax office and from 1942 on to the German Reich's audit office , where he a. a. was busy reviewing the so-called " Jewish property tax ". In 1944 he was drafted into military service.

After the Second World War, Hartmann was first head of the main customs office in Munich, before joining the Bavarian Ministry of Finance as a budget clerk and later head of the budget department at the end of 1945 . In 1947 he was appointed director of the financial administration at the Economic Council of the United Economic Area in Frankfurt, and he played a key role in the preparation and implementation of the 1948 currency reform .

In 1949 he joined the CSU , and from 1949 to 1959 was a permanent state secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance .

Even after his retirement he remained connected to the ministry in an advisory capacity, e. B. as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board and head of a working group on sales tax reform.

As State Secretary, Hartmann held several supervisory board positions in state-owned companies, including the energy company VEBA . After his retirement in 1959, he moved to VEBA as CEO, where he remained until 1965, where he initiated the privatization of the group. After leaving the board of directors, Hartmann was made honorary chairman of the company in 1966.

Hartmann was married and the father of four children, including Ulrich Hartmann , who later became chairman of the VEBA and E.ON AG board .
