Mnason

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mnason ( ancient Greek μνασων ) was a Cypriot Christian in the 1st century . In the Bible ( Acts 21.16  EU ) he is referred to as a disciple of the Apostle Paul , at whom Paul and Luke were guests with some other disciples from Caesarea on their way from Caesarea to Jerusalem during the third missionary journey (57 AD. ). Mnason was the companion of Herakleidios , the first bishop of Tamassos , in Cyprus , and after his death his successor in the episcopate.

Life

According to a legend, Mnason is the son of a pagan priest from Tamassos. During a study visit to Rome, he got to know some of the Seventy disciples . This gave rise to his desire to meet the apostles Simon Peter and John in Jerusalem. After his baptism he returned to Cyprus, where he met Barnabas , Paulus and Mark, and finally Herakleidios.

Adoration

Mnason is venerated as a saint . His feast day is October 19th. A sarcophagus in the monastery of St. Herakleidios in Tamassos is considered to be the tomb of Mnason.
