Gary Stephan (* 1942 in Brooklyn ) is an American painter.

Career

Stephan studied industrial design at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute . In 1965 he moved to San Francisco, where he graduated in 1967 with a Master of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute . On his return to New York, he worked as a studio assistant to Jasper Johns until he began exhibiting regularly at the David Whitney Gallery in 1970. Above all, the Whitney Biennial exhibitions in 1971 and 1973 prompted Roberta Smith to say, "Gary Stephan's work is one of the most widely noticed developments of the early 1970s."

He lives and works in New York City and Stone Ridge, NY and teaches on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts in the Master of Fine Arts program. He is represented by Susan Inglett Gallery in New York and Devening Projects + Editions in Chicago.

Stephan has exhibited in the United States and Europe since the late 1960s. His painting is expressed in postmodern, abstract paintings that primarily examine the status of the image in the conflict between object / illusionism and place it in a constant field of tension. Graphic sheets, sculptures, photographs and video works complete his work. Institutions such as the Drawing Center in Manhattan, the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art have exhibited his work. From September 13, 2017 to January 13, 2018, a retrospective took place at the Kienzle Art Foundation in Berlin, which was shown from January 26 to March 11, 2018 in the Städtische Galerie Waldkraiburg .
