Franz Gerhard Cremer (born March 24, 1845 in Düsseldorf ; † December 8, 1908 there ) was a German history painter of the Nazarene movement of the Düsseldorf School . He also appeared as a restorer and as an author of art historical and painting-technical writings.

Life

Cremer, son of the wealthy Düsseldorf businessman, soap manufacturer and iron and steel shareholder Engelbert Cremer, grew up in Düsseldorf and studied painting and art history at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1863 to 1869 . There Andreas and Karl Müller , Julius Roeting , Rudolf Wiegmann and Josef Kohlschein were his teachers. In 1869 Cremer was one of the signatories of a letter published in the press to the Berlin Ministry of Education, in which 38 academy students protested against the appointment of Hermann Wislicenus as professor of history painting. He later joined Wilhelm Sohn . At the beginning of 1884 Cremer joined the Historical Association for the Lower Rhine . On May 6, 1884, he married Walburga Kallen (1855–1925) in Cologne , where he was living as a history painter at the time. The couple had ten children, five daughters and five sons. The daughter Adelgundis (1885-1914) married the entrepreneur and banker Peter Wilhelm Werhahn from Neuss on February 5, 1907 , who after her death on November 20, 1917 married her sister Magdalene (1896-1991). By 1889 at the latest, Cremer lived again in Düsseldorf, in the house at Ritterstrasse No. 2, which was owned by the family with No. 4 and No. 6. Franz Cremer's grandfather Peter bought the building in 1811 in which Cremer's father built a candle factory.

In 1883 he worked as a restorer for the Duisburg Salvatorkirche , where he restored whitewashed wall and ceiling paintings. He published works on the history of fresco and oil painting from 1891 to 1902. From 1904 onwards, Cremer wrote several articles for the magazine for Christian art published by Alexander Schnütgen . He served as secretary on the board of this magazine for several years.
