Mobility Competence

Mobility competence means, in addition to mastering traffic rules and safe behavior in traffic, knowing and taking into account the risks of road traffic, the laws of driving physics and human-biological performance limits as well as the ability to operate means of transport in a communal sense.

Traffic pedagogical perspective

Mobility competence is one of the main objectives of traffic education . You will have specific learning programs such as the Karlsruhe 12-step program provides or driving courses and tests as the pedestrian diploma that cycling or driving test secured and documented. The traffic pedagogical point of view places the reason, the willingness and the ability to take responsibility of the road user in the foreground, also when choosing the means of transport . "The imparting of mobility skills is the task of traffic and mobility education from kindergarten through elementary school to secondary schools as well as continuous traffic education for adults." The necessary knowledge bases, objectives and methods are developed by the didactics of traffic education .

School beginners achieve the mobility competence they deserve if they prove to be able to safely cope with their way to school and changes of location close to their home as an independent pedestrian .

Traffic psychological perspective

PASS model

Traffic psychologists define mobility competence in adults as “the totality of the long-term physical, mental, behavioral and attitude-related requirements of the driver for the safe and cooperative driving of vehicles”. There are three levels of competence development:

  1. Mobility education in school and in adolescence as well as support programs (e.g. accompanied driving )
  2. Legally regulated assistance in the context of point systems (e.g. advanced seminars ) as well as in the qualification of professional drivers
  3. Assistance for reintegration after a driving license has been withdrawn
