Modesto Cortazar

Modesto Cortázar Leal de Ibarra (born June 15, 1783 in Briviesca ( Burgos province ), † January 25, 1862 in Madrid ) was a Spanish politician and Prime Minister of Spain ( Presidente del Gobierno ) .

biography

After studying law , he worked as a judge and was most recently a lawyer and President of the Valladolid Court .

In the elections of July 24, 1839 he was elected member of parliament ( Congreso de los Diputados ), where he represented the constituency of Zamora until February 1, 1841 .

On August 29, 1840, he was appointed as the successor to Valentín Ferraz as Prime Minister ( Presidente del Gobierno ) of a transitional government in which he also took over the office of Minister for Appeals for Mercy and Justice ( Ministro de Gracia y Justicia ). Just two weeks later, however, he had to resign and was replaced as Prime Minister by Vicente Sancho .

In the period from 1843 to 1853, known as the "Moderates Decade" ( Década Moderada ), he was again represented as a member of parliament in the elections of September 15, 1844 and this time was alternately representative of the constituencies of Burgos until October 20, 1851 and Zamora. During this time he was briefly President of Parliament in January 1847. In the same year he was appointed Foreign Minister ( Ministro de Estado ) on September 12, 1847 in the cabinet of Florencio García Goyena , of which he was a member until October 4, 1847.

In recognition of his political merits, he was finally appointed Senator for life ( Senador Vitalicio ) on October 20, 1851 .
