Makobo Constance Modjadji VI.

Makobo Constance Modjadji VI. (* 1978 in Polokwane , Transvaal , South Africa ; † June 12, 2005 ibid) was a tribal queen in northern South Africa.

Modjadji VI. was crowned the youngest rain queen of the Balobedu tribe, one of the few matriarchal tribes in Africa , on April 16, 2003 in Duiwelskloof ( Limpopo Province ) . She succeeded her grandmother Mokope Modjadji V., who had died two years earlier, and belonged to the Monomatapa dynasty.

The actual successor, Makobo's mother, Princess Maria Modjadji, had died two days before the grandmother. Makobo became the youngest queen of the 400-year-old dynasty after passing ritual trials. Makobo graduated from high school , becoming the first queen to graduate from school. Since it did not shut itself off from modern technologies such as television or mobile phones, many observers saw it as a bridge between tradition and modernity.

Every queen of this tribe is said to have an influence on the weather in Africa. It is for this reason that they are called the rain queens. In fact, there was a period of drought during the period of non-Regency. At the coronation, however, a light drizzle set in. When asked if she could really conjure up rain, Modjadji VI replied. a reporter that only God could do this, but she could establish contact with the ancestors. As with all African peoples, ancestors play a central role among the Balobedu. Anyone who loses contact with their ancestors loses their soul.

When she died in the Polokwane clinic , where she was admitted two days earlier, she left a daughter who was three months old. The African National Congress , President Thabo Mbeki and other personalities from South Africa gave their condolences to the royal family.
