Modjadjiskloof (German about: "Modjadjis Schlucht"; until 2004 Duiwelskloof , German about: "Teufelsschlucht") is a city in the South African province of Limpopo . It is the administrative center of the municipality of Greater Letaba in the district Mopani .

In 2011 Modjadjiskloof had 1815 inhabitants (2011 census). The city lies at the foot of the Great Escarpment .

history

In 1920 the place Duiwelskloof was founded as a place. A Modjadji train station was built as early as 1914 , which was later renamed Duiwelskloof and which still exists today. In 2004 the city was renamed in honor of the "rain queen" Modjadji , the head of the Balobedu . The place is the center of the settlement area of ​​the Balobedu, a group of the Bapedi .

The trunk road R36 runs roughly in a north-south direction through the city and connects the N1 at Louis Trichardt with Tzaneen . Modjadjiskloof is located on the Soekmekaar - Komatipoort railway line , which also connects the south of Zimbabwe with the south of Mozambique , and is served by freight traffic.
