Moenkhausia lepidura is a freshwater fish species from the family of the true tetras (Characidae) and is widespread in tropical South America. Its distribution area is in the Amazon basin , in the catchment area of the Orinoco and in the rivers of the three Guayanas .

features

Moenkhausia lepidura has an elongated, laterally strongly flattened body and becomes about eleven centimeters long. According to the wide distribution area, the species is very variable in color and is divided into several subspecies. The basic color of the nominate form is brownish with a darker back and a rather whitish belly. There is a dark spot behind the gill cover and above the base of the pectoral fin. An olive-green to golden shimmering, straight longitudinal band runs from the rear edge of the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin. The fins are yellowish or reddish. The anal fin is not separated from the body by a dark line. The anterior, upper lobe of the caudal fin has a reddish spot rounded towards the back. Behind it lies a blackish zone. The top of the upper lobe and the lower lobe are transparent. Females are generally more powerfully built, while males are slimmer.

Systematics

The species was the Austrian Zoologist and 1858 ichthylogist Rudolf Kner by type specimens from the Guaporé from the southwestern Amazon basin as Tetragonopterus Lepidurus described and later the genus Moenkhausia assigned.
