Moeraki Kemu is a board game for two players developed by Stefan Kiehl . It is handcrafted and mostly made of high quality materials ( jade and glass ). The aim is to occupy sections of the beach as a tribal chief of the Maori and to hold them by skillfully using your own game pieces. The game was released by Kiehly in 2011 .

How to play

The game is played by two players. Each player has 28 game pieces and a Maori tane (warrior). In the course of the game, the stones are alternately placed in the hollows of the game board, with an attempt to conquer a stretch of beach. This is achieved by marking out a field with four pieces. The player who has proportionately placed the most stones in such a field of four receives one point. This is symbolized by a tribal token. The winner is the player who manages to conquer most of the beach sections by the end of the game.
In addition, a player wins early (if not all of the pieces have been placed) if one of the following conditions is met:

  • He succeeded in covering a section of the beach with four of his own stones.
  • One of the straight rows of balls that run across the playing field and connected with black lines is completely covered with its own balls. If the Moeraki ball is also in this row, it is sufficient to fill it with your own balls from the edge of the field to the Moeraki ball.
  • The four ball hollows connected by the white Moeraki circle are covered with four of your own game pieces or the Moeraki ball and three of your own game pieces.

Special features

The game board and the warrior figures are handmade, so each game is unique . Clay (warrior figure), glass (game pieces) and jade (Moeraki ball) were used for the game material . Furthermore, the game initially appeared in an edition of 1,000 copies.
