Moh Youn Sook (born May 3, 1910 in Wŏnsan , Hamgyŏng-namdo ; † June 7, 1990 in Seoul ) was a South Korean poet and member of the National Assembly .

Life

Moh Youn Sook was born on May 3, 1910 in Wŏnsan, Hamgyŏng-namdo. Her stage name was Yŏngun (영운 | 嶺 雲). She graduated from Ehwa Technical College with a degree in literature . She taught at various girls' high schools and worked as a journalist for Samch'ŏlli Verlag and the Central Broadcasting Company . In 1940 she was detained in a police station in Kyŏnggi Province for her poetry . After the liberation of Korea in 1945, she was not only active in literature, but also in various other areas. Her early works were often criticized for indulging in superficial sensibility and sentimentalism. They are characterized by the accurate representation of suppressed passion in direct and vivid images. Her poems may be daring, dynamic and occasionally crowded, but they often do not address a single loved one, rather the object of their outburst of emotions is usually the Korean nation. Their fierce and often frustrated patriotism branches out into aspects of history, territory, nature and regional affairs. Before the liberation, like so many other authors, she was forced to adapt her works to the political guidelines of the occupiers. She tended more and more to "pure lyricism", a poem full of pure, disembodied lyricism that contained no political, social or historical allusions. After the liberation, however, she gave free rein to her patriotic impulses and wrote highly inspiring patriotic works in which she celebrated the prevailing nationalist consciousness of the time.
