Mohamed Hussein Sarahang

Mohamed Hussain Sarahang (* 1924 in Kabul , † 1983 in Kabul; Persian استاد محمد حسین سرآهنگ) was an Afghan classical and ghazal singer .

He was born in 1924 in Charabat , a district of Kabul . Mohamed Hussein was introduced to classical Afghan music at an early age by his father Gholam Hussein. At the age of 16 he went to India to the Patiala Gharana (music school), where he was taught by Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan . At the age of 25 he returned to Kabul. There he gave his first concert in the Pamir Cinema in Kabul , whereupon the then King of Afghanistan, Mohammed Sahir Shah , awarded him the title Sarahang (“peak of sound”). In 1969 he received 496 votes for the nomination for best artist. Ustād Sarahang's repertoire amounts to around 500 ragas and ghazals , which he recorded in India and on Afghan radio in Kabul . He sang many songs by the Persian poet Amir Chosrau . Sarahang is also the author of two books on music.
