Seyyed Mohammad Reza Golpayegani ( Persian سید محمدرضا گلپایگانی, DMG Seyyed Moḥammad-Reżā Golpāyegānī ; * 1899 ; † 1993 ) was a Shiite Grand Ayatollah who lived in seclusion in Qom , where he is buried in the prayer hall in the shrine of Fatima Masuma .

Golpayegani studied under Ayatollah Abdolkarim Haeri Yazdi , who developed the city of Qom into the theological center of Iran . Golpayegani, who had a theological reputation over Ruhollah Khomeini , was reluctant to face the principle of the rule of one legal scholar developed by Khomeini and realized with the Islamic Revolution in 1979 . His quietistic attitude prevented political influence.
