Origin of name

The name is spoken locally in Java as in the German spelling as Mojokerto, which is derived from the Malay words “Maja” and “Karta”. The first word Maja (as in Majapahitisches Reich) stands for the Bengali quince which was to be found in the region around the new capital of this historical empire; the second word Karta or Kerta means fortress. The name ultimately means quince fortress.

history

In 1937, German scientists and engineers built a high-voltage test facility on the outskirts of Mojokerto, which was used as a test field for energy supply systems in tropical countries. Electrical high-voltage components and systems with 70 kV high voltage generated in the nearby Mendalan power station were tested. The high-voltage line was laid as far as the port city of Surabaya .
