Mokhtar Belmokhtar (born June 1, 1972 or 1978 in Ghardaia , Algeria as Mukhtar bin Mohammed Balmukhtar ), also known as Khalid Abu Al-Abbas and under the names Al-Awar (German: "The one-eyed") and Mr Marlboro , is a Algerian war veteran from the Soviet Afghan war and a legally convicted terrorist. In mid-June 2015, the Libyan interim government announced the death of Belmokhtar in an official statement, which, however , is denied by the terrorist organization al-Qaeda .

Career as a terrorist

At the age of 19, Belmokhtar was a radical Islamic fighter in Afghanistan . In 1993 he returned to Algeria and fought alongside insurgent Islamists against the Algerian armed forces. There he rose quickly in the hierarchy of Islamists and repeatedly joined new groups that operate in the border areas between southern Algeria, Mali, Chad, Niger and Mauritania.

Belmokhtar was considered one of the leading figures of the al-Qaeda organization in the Maghreb (French: Organization al-Qaïda au Maghreb Islamique (AQMI)) and was sentenced to death by an Algerian court in absentia for terrorism in January 2012. Belmokhtar now runs his own Islamist organization, the Muwaqiun bi-l dam (loosely translated: "Those who sign with the blood"), a subgroup of the Katibat al-Mouthalimin Brigades (loosely translated: "Brigade of those who wear the veil"). She is one of several groups led by Belmokhtar. His terrorist group confessed to taking In Aménas hostage on January 16, 2013.

Belmokhtar financed its terrorist activities with kidnappings, arms theft and arms trafficking. He got the name Mr. Marlboro in the course of his activities in the cigarette smuggling. Al-Jazeera called him Emir Mokhtar Ben Mokhtar (MBM). On a photo it is with the Sandzak Sherif , Schesch the Tuareg , green field jacket and a Kalashnikov AK-74 displayed. The Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) offered a bounty of up to $ 5 million for clues leading to the location of Belmokhtar through its Operation Rewards for Justice (RFJ). According to Spiegel Online , the amount is said to be $ 23 million.
